about

Dirk Darmstaedter is pop music’s Steve McQueen.
That’s right, you heard me. I said Steve McQueen…one of the biggest American box-office draws of the ‘60s and ‘70s.
McQueen “the King of Cool,” blue-eyed, blonde haired, handsome, rugged and the epitome of what you wish you could be.
When I first met Dirk it was obvious to me. He oozes cool.
He doesn’t even try – it’s just there. A man men admire and women wanna put in a love tackle.

Over the years Dirk’s made a lot of records. His discography reads like the phone directory – too long to put down here. He’s been going strong since 1989 with early hits followed by gigantic artistic development not usually found in artists graced with youthful success. So if you don’t own any of his musical past his latest is a perfectly good place to start.
You see, Dirk has gotten better and better over time. I think “Our Favorite City” is his best yet. It was recorded with Lee Russell in England in a renovated old church. The good vibe there soaked into every groove of this record. You can hear how much fun these guys had making it. The production is classic and uncluttered - mellotrons and layered harmonies abound. Guitar textures to admire and great drumming from Lars Plogschties – a Ringo for 2007. It’s obvious upon first listen that Dirk has impeccable taste in pop music. He’s distilled all the musical greats into his own style. When I hear this record I can’t help but play “spot the influences...” So pardon me if I do a little…

“We Beat the Drum” starts out a wee bit like Trash Can Sinatras with a nifty tremolo guitar line but it’s got a walloping chorus that makes me think of Neil Finn. This is a great tune. I’d like to cover it but this version is so good – what’s the point? “Shirly and Nancy” with its Kinks-like shuffle and wonderful mellotrons - Jellyfish meets Jon Brion. Do you know those guys? Well, you should…Dirk’s falsetto vocals are sublime on this one.
“I Won’t Give Up On You” with its beautiful acoustic guitars and insistent rhythm section; honest and pure lyrics. Paul McCartney would’ve chopped off his ex-bride’s other leg to have penned this one. “The Second Hand Life” and its yearning for a better life is classic Darmstaedter. A song about regular people dreaming of breaking out of the mundane. Once again, the vocals are spectacular. “Trigger Happy” ends it all with another stellar vocal – if Dylan could sing like a bird he’d be Dirk Darmstaedter on this track.

McQueen once said, “I would rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth.” It’s too bad he never visited “Our Favorite City” – he might’ve changed his mind.
