Jackson Brown wrote this song when he was 16 years old.
That would have been in 1964/1965.
Nico first recorded the song on her 1967 ‘Chelsea Girl’ album.
Her teutonic drawl gives the song a pretty unexpected and slightly eerie twist. Gregg Allmann’s 1973 version of the song is still considered to be the ‘definitive’ version of the song by many though.
The song has also been recorded by Paul Westerberg, St. Vincent, Fountains of Wayne, Mates of State, and Drake and has quietly become a classic over the years.
Pitchfork Media's 2006 ranking of "The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960s" placed the Nico version of "These Days" at number 31.
So, on a humid June afternoon in 2019 it was my turn to sing and record this beautiful tune.
